What is intelligence? Is it just simply another adaptation, like vision or the emotions? Or is it something special – a whole new layer of matter perhaps, as different from life in general as life itself is from the chemical reaction?
But in what sense is intelligence different? What kind of existence do intelligent beings like ourselves have that makes us so special? Our bizarrely convoluted cultures? The astonishing power of our technology? Or is it the much simpler, yet somehow more profound fact that we created the human world ourselves?
And if intelligence is different, how did it come into existence in the first place? Can we ever explain a creature that is as interested in quasars and quantum mechanics as its ancestors were in food or mates? Or is there a scientifically plausible account of the phylogeny and ontogeny of human beings that uses only standard evolutionary and developmental methods, yet concludes with such a radically different kind of creature that the very word ‘organism’ scarcely seems to capture its radical new nature?All the questions are raised – and answered – by The Birth of Reason.
